13th Nov 2007

Playground Makeovers for Local Primary SchoolsPlay time will be a lot more colourful for eight primary schools north and south of the border when they benefit from a playground makeover thanks to the Ulster Bank Supergrounds scheme. This is the first year the scheme has been extended south of the border.

Funding of 40,000 (56,000) will be invested in redevelopment projects for schools in Belfast, Cork, Dublin, Randalstown, Markethill, Lisburn, Crawfordsburn and Coagh.

Ulster Bank Supergrounds is part of a 6 million initiative improving 900 primary school playgrounds over six years across the UK.

The Northern Ireland schools selected to each receive a 5,000 playground makeover are: Maine Integrated Primary School - Randalstown, Greenwood Primary School - East Belfast, Markethill Primary School, St Josephs Primary School - Lisburn, Crawfordsburn Primary School near Bangor and Derrychrin Primary School - Coagh.

Mike Bamber, Chief Executive of Retail Markets, Ulster Bank Group said that the initiative aims to create a stimulating educational space which can be a valuable extra resource for schools.

Ulster Bank Supergrounds has been developed to underpin links between our employees and their local community as employees nominate schools they have a connection with. Play is an important part of the enriched curriculum and we are delighted that this initiative can play its part in giving hundreds of pupils a well rounded primary school experience, he says.

The programme is managed on behalf of Ulster Bank by the national school grounds charity Learning Through Landscapes and environmental charity Groundwork UK.
